Burgundy Gilt Floral Sidewall

All-over sidewall patterns like this richly gilt example were popular in the latter half of the 1880s. A seeming profusion of foliage and flowers actually consists of a dense but highly structured double-repeat pattern where the details of the leaves and blossoms are less important than the overall textural effect.
